IMPORTANT NOTICE

EUROPAC Recruitment Update

We are pleased to share that we anticipate reopening to new recruitment in early autumn 2026.

During our temporary closure, the EUROPAC team has been working hard to reduce backlogs, review our processes, and restructure our pathways. We aim to make registration simpler, quicker, and more accessible for participants. As part of this work, we are undertaking a major upgrade and modernisation of our database and supporting systems, which will help us deliver a more efficient service in the future.

We want to thank everyone for their patience and continued support during this period. We look forward to welcoming new participants again when recruitment reopens.

We are also delighted to share a new publication from the EUROPAC team:

EUROPAC+

WHAT IS EUROPAC?

EUROPAC started to recruit families in 1997 and we currently have over 2000 families registered with us. We are a research study aiming to understand inherited conditions of the pancreas. We recruit people with a family history of pancreatic cancer and people who have been diagnosed with hereditary pancreatitis. We offer secondary pancreatic cancer screening to those who are considered to be at a higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer.

We will ask you to complete detailed personal and family history questionnaires and make an assessment of your pancreatic cancer risk based on this.  Should you be eligible for screening, we normally start this at the age of 40 (though may start screening prior to this is certain circumstances).

Further information about the two arms of the trial can be found below.

WHERE CAN I TAKE PART?

The trial is based at The Royal Liverpool University Hospital, where all recruitment takes place. Once recruited, we have 16 screening centres around the UK. These are:

  • Royal Liverpool Hospital

  • Freeman Hospital, Newcastle

  • St James' Hospital, Leeds

  • Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham

  • Royal Stoke University Hospital

  • Bristol Royal Infirmary

  • University College London Hospital

  • University Hospital, Southampton

  • Derriford Hospital, Plymouth

  • Royal Devon and Exeter

  • Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford

  • Glasgow Royal Infirmary

  • Morriston Hospital, Swansea

  • Aberdeen Royal Infirmary

  • Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley

  • John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford

Updates

Over recent months, our project has experienced a reduction in funding. As a result, our team capacity has been significantly reduced, and some aspects of our work have had to slow down. While this has been challenging, we remain committed to ensuring that the insights and contributions continue to have an impact.

Despite these constraints, we’re pleased to share that we have recently published new findings from the study:

European Registry of Hereditary Pancreatic Diseases (EUROPAC): Protocol

Risk-stratified surveillance for individuals in the UK at high risk of developing pancreatic cancer

Encouragingly, thanks to a recent kind donation, we are now working towards restarting sample collection in the near future. We will share more details as plans develop.
